Markie or Silkan?

July 31, 2017

That is, what do you call a cross between a Maran and a Silkie? Since the demise of poor Big Fella earlier this year, Wee Man has stepped up (literally!) to the task of head cockerel. He hasn’t managed to woo all of the marans, but some of the slightly smaller birds have succumbed to his charms!

Between them, BB, Thelma & Louise have managed to rear three chicks, hardly a great success but probably more than we expected. We were interested to see which chacteristics would be dominant. At eight weeks old their inherited features are quite clear; bantam, Maran feathering/colour, 4 toes (Maran) and surprisingly, some definite Silkie ‘bonnets’!

Wee Man’s days as head honcho will soon be in jeopardy and will hopefully not involve too much aggression. We have two candidates waiting in the wings; a couple of handsome Blue-laced Wyandottes which we reared ourselves. They are a lovely pair, gentle and friendly. They are eighteen weeks old tomorrow and are currently trying to perfect their crowing technique!

A silver lining…

March 8, 2017

…or is that four silver linings? More like wee fluffy rain clouds really, but after the loss of Big Fella, BB cheered us up with the arrival of her first brood of the year.

And do you think that maybe our next rooster is waiting in this box? I ordered Wyandotte fertilized eggs online, a breed that sounds perfect for our needs.

Meanwhile, with no competition, Wee Man thinks it’s his birthday, surrounded by our new layers! Of course he can’t reach ‘the task’ with some of the bigger girls! We reared our new Cuckoo Maran girls last season to replace our old, decreasing stock.

Making plans and work in progress

January 8, 2015

We’re still getting a good variety of winter weather; two days are rarely the same. Today’s view demonstrates that it’s been a chilly one…

The View

…not too bad but obviously cold enough for Mrs Under-by to warm one foot at a time!

Everyone was taking advantage of the sunny spells and played nicely together.

Wee Man insisted on having his picture taken, just to demonstrate that he doesn’t always look like a wrung out mop head. (Just a dry one that’s ready for use, but don’t tell him I said that!)

Yesterday on the other hand, was an absolute wash-out. It made for plenty of puddles to thoroughly investigate however!

A good day for indoor projects, so I’ve started to tackle the re-covering of the parlour suite.

It’s a slow process but quite absorbing – except when a fast and furious feline has nothing to do but make a nuisance of herself!

We’ve also spent some time in the old church, making plans, drawing them and taking measurements for the new quail accommodation; indoor runs and brooders to start with, outdoor runs will come with the warmer weather!

We’ll need a name for our new quail venture. Kevin came up with ‘Glen Quail’. What do you think?
