Double loss at Garybuie

I know, I know, it’s been quite some time since you heard from Garybuie, but more of that another day. It’s unfortunate that my ‘Returning To The Blogging World’ post is one which brings sad news – on two counts. Firstly, Broody Brenda, our wonderful mother hen, died yesterday.

" Is this my best side?"

” Is this my best side?”

She’s been quiet for a few days, nothing specific but just winding down I suppose. She was ten years old and a great character, raising scores of chicks over the years. She was a frequent visitor to the kitchen, stealing any leftovers from the cats. All cats respected Broody Brenda!

And secondly, Patches has gone missing. We returned from our end-of-season holiday last week and we haven’t seen her. Our cat/chicken holiday carers didn’t see her but there was nothing unusual about that as she’s not keen on strangers and will only sneak back to continue her snoozing when they leave! We’ve been searching the area although she never wanders far. Plump as she is, she can move pretty fast the minute she hears a car, so being killed by one seems unlikely. I phoned both vets in the area, but no one has brought in an injured cat. With Brenda, there was hard evidence of her demise but not so with Patches so I still have my fingers crossed that she’s gone off in protest and sneaks back for food during the night. In our former life in England, we once had a cat go missing for six months after which he came sauntering up the driveway like nothing was amiss!

The not knowing when they disappear is the hard part. I hope your pretty Patches turns up soon…..or news of her, at the very least. You’ll miss your Mother Hen.

You’re absolutely right. I hate the term ‘closure’, but at least we have that with Broody Brenda.

Oh, no!! I’m so sorry you lost your charming Brenda, and hope very much that sweet Patches returns swiftly and in fine fettle, only having taking a holiday for a bit. (((HUGS))) in the meantime!

I shall miss the tales of Broody Brenda, as I am sure you will miss her presence, in the kitchen and on her nest. So very sorry to hear about your beautiful, sweet Patches. I hope she returns to you very soon. It is the not knowing that is hardest to bear. Kate

Thanks for your thoughts Kate. If only Hamish and Dottie could talk, they might be able to shed some light on Auntie Patches’ whereabouts!

After a good month weather-wise it turned pretty nasty yesterday and I thought that she might be driven home. No such luck though. thanks for your crossed fingers!

So sorry for your loss of Brenda – I used to enjoy reading about “her broodiness”. Poor Patches, I hope she finds her way home. Cats are such a law unto themselves it’s difficult to know what they’re up to. I hope you find out one way or the other – preferably the nice way. We had a lovely boy go missing 4 years ago and still don’t know what happened to him. Very sad.

If she is out there Diane, at least she’s well equipped. She’s a good hunter and as you know, she has certain ‘reserves’!

Good to see a post from you. I was just wondering recently if you were still blogging. It isn’t always easy to keep up the momentum with posting, is it? Sorry to hear about your loss of Brenda and I do hope patches returns home safe and well.

Not easy at all Anne, especially when this season has been so busy; not enough hours in the day! We’ve been having some major thoughts about the future at Garybuie, and I shall post about the outcome in the not too distant future! Thanks for your thoughts on Brenda and Patches.
