Custody battle

Puff’s done it again! Biggles has been busy hatching her ducklings over the past 24 hours and the minute she popped out to stretch her wings, Puff laid claim to them, abandoning her own eggs just like she did last year.

Of course when Biggles returned, there was a vociferous custody battle. Click below to witness!

Custody battle

Eventually, things calmed down with Puff seemingly winning the case and Biggles returned to her remaining unhatched eggs. As the day progressed though, joint custody was eventually agreed upon! Unfortunately, during negotiations, one wee mite got abandoned partially hatched. I discovered it at feeding time this afternoon and it was cold, with its lower half stuck firmly to the very dried out egg membrane. After some gentle teasing with a warm, damp cloth, the shell was removed and the little guy was given some recovery time under the infra-red. Amazingly, after about 15 minutes, it was perky and dry, so Kevin took it back to the two mums who seemed content to let it snuggle in with its siblings.

And there’s someone who’s more than happy with the day’s events; Brenda! She now has all Puff’s eggs to herself, although what she’ll think of the outcome is anyone’s guess!

Goodness me! What are they like? Our Brenda seems to be the star of the show! Are the ducks sharing the ducklings? What a fantastic performance! c

So far they seem to be sharing nicely! What will happen when (and if) Broody Brenda appears with HER ducklings goodness only knows! We’ll find out in about 10 days!
