All flights resumed!

Finally, after many weeks of mooching about outside the kitchen window looking dishevelled, the Muscovies have re-grown all their feathers including the long-awaited flight feathers. So, during a recent short respite from the arctic conditions, normal flights were resumed here at Garybuie, which is more than can be said for much of the U.K! As the snow thawed, all the ducks and many of the chickens made the most of rediscovering the surrounding croft land, getting there either by flight, waddle or strut depending on species.

Feathered friends' feeding frenzy!

Keeping those new feathers in tip-top condition

Puff and Biggles have also enjoyed returning to their favoured perch – with or without Hamie – on the handrail of the bridge to the old church. Huff has to remain on the bridge itself however, as vertical take-offs and precision flying are NOT his strong points!

Perching again!

Duck wannabe?

No thaw

The ‘warmer’ conditions didn’t last long though and like many other parts of the country, fairly heavy snowfalls and sub-zero temperatures have returned with a vengeance. In fact today, even by lunchtime, the thermometer here at Garybuie was still showing -8.9! No thaw today then!

Enough of the weather! We have had a minor breakthrough this week with Delilah, our nomadic chicken. After trying to set up home with our batch of shed-dwelling younger birds and being routinely relocated every evening in the main hen-coop, her intended new home, she’s finally got the message! It has to be said though that it took the gradual dispatch of all the shed-dwellers and the subsequent locking of the shed door, which eventually made up her mind!

Problem pullet!

I doubt that I’ll be sharing any news until after Christmas now, so I’ll take the opportunity to wish all visitors to Garybuie’s blog a very Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year!

Merry Christmas from a snowy Garybuie!

Nice to read your news from Garybuie and the glen.
Love to you all, humans and animals.

HAVE you ever thought of adding a donkey to your menagerie of hens, ducks and piggies?
Then Kevin could walk round singing “Delaney’s Donkey” (remember the old Val Doonican hit?) instead of driving poor Christine crazy with twinkle, twinkle little star.

How could we forget that particular hit? We even got a small wedding present of a wooden donkey from someone who regularly reminded us of it! The up-side of the ‘Twinkle, twinkle…’ song, is that it only lasts for the festive season – heaven forbid the hearing the Irish number all year long! Also, the ducks and chickens endeavour to eat/dig up as much veg as they can, a donkey would probably eat the washing too! (Or is that goats?)
