Heatwave hits Skye!

After lots of wet and dreary weather last week, the sun is now making up for lost time! The last few days have been absolutely gorgeous – and hot too! Needless to say, as soon as the sun made a firm appearance, Kevin went into barbecue mode! The bright sunshine and nice breeze meant that the midges – who first put in an appearance a couple of weeks ago – were kept at bay, although as you can see from the picture we had some other inquisitive guests instead.

Getting closer!

The great weather continued over the weekend and so after a busy Saturday we decided to have a mini holiday on Sunday by making a trek up Ben Tianavaig on the other side of Portree and then visiting our friends Jenni and Patrick, who have finally moved into their new home in the small township of Camustianavaig at the foot of the hill. A rare occasion indeed to find that any hill on Skye has little or no breeze on top! But that was the case on this particular occasion with most of the walk up being in stifling heat. At least on top there was enough air-flow to cool our well earned egg sandwiches! The climb was well worth it though as the views were awesome in all directions with peace and quiet to match.

So after our brief and hot ‘holiday’, we ventured back down towards the shore for a delightful cooling of our feet in the water! Off then to visit Jenni and Patrick in their new home of two days where they plied us with much needed refreshment including some very much appreciated strawberries and ice cream!
Even though they are still up to their eyes in boxes, they both radiated a happiness which has been a long time coming.
At last!

At last!

We got the ‘grand tour’ which included the garden – a place full of colour, interesting nooks and crannies and great potential. We wish them both many years of happiness in their new lives on Skye!

Meanwhile back on the homestead, A couple of empty shells in Broody Brenda’s vicinity indicate that hatching had begun and so hopefully, we’ll get our first glimpse of her new family very soon. And lastly, on the duck front, lots of strange head bobbing and neck biting has been going on over the last few days which we’re assuming is the establishment of the pecking order.

    Hi Matthew,

Great poem – it made us both smile! All that sun and Thai food must have got your creative juices flowing! Or maybe it’s just married life making you all poetic!
